Italy defeats China - Round of 16
Italy defeated China in the knockout stage of the 2019 Women's World Cup, winning the match 2-0 to advance to the quarter-finals. 14 minutes into the match, Italy's Valentina Giacinti completed a great sequence by advancing the ball from midfield, passing it to a teammate just above the box to ultimately getting the ball back for a score, moving past 3 China defenders. And Italy's second goal happened 48 minutes in, a pass to Aurora Galli that was kicked in strong well behind the box.
Brazil defeats Italy - Group Stage Match 3
Brazil beat Italy 1-0 in the third group stage match of the 2019 Women's World Cup. Italy had already advanced to the Round of 16 and with this win Brazil secured their spot in advancement as well. This match went scoreless through 73 minutes of play, with many chances for both sides narrowly missing. But it was the penalty kick Brazil's Marta earned and scored on that made the difference. Marta became the all-time scorer in World Cup history, for men's or women's soccer with this goal, giving her 17 World Cup goals in total.
Italy defeats Jamaica - Group Stage Match 2
Italy handily beat Jamaica 5-0 in the second group stage match of the 2019 Women's World Cup. Italy's Christiana Girelli earned herself the coveted hat trick, scoring on a penalty kick just before the 12 minute mark, a tap in score from an outside-the-box assist 24 minutes in, and her third goal came at the 46 minute mark with a head butt from a lofted assist just feet from the goal. Italy's final two scores both came from midfielder Aurora Galli, one from just outside the box 71 minutes in and the other where she handled the ball past the goalie for an easy strike at the 80 minute marker.
Italy defeats Australia - Group Stage Match 1
Italy won its first group stage match by beating Australia 2-1 in the opening round of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in Paris, France. This was the first ever match-up in a Women's World Cup for Italy and Australia. Italy's Barbara Bonansea scored in the first 8 minutes but an offside call nullified the goal. At the 21st minute Australia's Sam Kerr missed a penalty kick but kicked it in on a second effort for her first ever World Cup goal. Bonansea stole the ball in the 55th minute and scored Italy's first. And Bonansea scored yet again from the far post at the 94th minute for the win.
